Reel Works Staff: Why “Get Out” is the Best Scary Movie of All Time

What is the single greatest scary movie of all time? Reel Works challenged our staff to answer this question, and the results were clear. Almost unanimously, the team chose the 2017 award-winning film Get Out.

Why is Get Out the greatest scary movie of all time? Let's hear it directly from our staff...

“There are few films where your friends say “I cannot tell you what happened, you just have to see it.” Get Out is one of those films. It cannot be contained by any one genre with its symbolism, complex storyline and multiple layers of social critique.” – Mara Sheban and Charles Reynoso

“Get Out is a classic horror movie for the new generation full of excellent performances, while presenting a compelling story about race.  Daniel Kaluuya’s award-winning performance kept the audience engaged and thrilled. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut compared the Black experience in America to living in a horror film. The concept of conforming to “whiteness” was a metaphor for modern-day slavery.” – Keisha Katz and John Williams

“Get Out is one of the scariest movies of all time because a lot of the scenes can actually happen, to anyone, in real life! How many of us have been to a garden party with strangers and had weird questions put to us? Has a stranger ever stared at you for an inappropriate length of time? Have you ever accepted a cup of tea from a stranger, and would you? Have you ever met your partner’s parents for the first time? Scary, right? Get Out reveals the lurking horror that can happen in these seemingly normal situations.” – Ebony Hatchett and Christiamilda Correa

And there you have it! If you’re looking for a thrill this Halloween, our staff recommends getting into Get Out. The film’s multi-genre depth, racial allegories, and everyday relatability make it a must-see this spooky season – and quite possibly the best scary movie of all time.
