  • The Documentary Lab

    The Doc Lab is our introductory documentary filmmaking workshop. High school students, ages 13-19, learn how to tell a story using filmmaking. They are paired 1:1 with professional filmmaker mentors to plan, shoot, edit, and present a short personal film about their lives and communities.

    Workshop Dates: October 21st - May 7th

    Monday and Tuesday from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

  • The Narrative Lab

    The Narrative Lab is our introductory narrative filmmaking workshop for high school filmmakers, ages 13-19, to develop original short films. The course focuses on screenwriting, advanced camera and lighting, casting and directing actors, producing, and post-production of short films. Students are paired 1:1 with professional mentors and meet weekly throughout the program.

    Workshop Dates: November 12th - May 20th

    Monday and Wednesday from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

FILM SCHOOL FRIDAYS DROP-INS

Looking to work on your filmmaking skills?

Film School Fridays Drop-Ins are an opportunity for young filmmakers to connect with peer mentors and craftspeople in the entertainment industry. Sharpen your skills with us, receive tutoring support in editing, cinematography and lighting, storytelling, and screenwriting, and sit in on our Film School Friday Guest Speaker events! This is a safe space to gather, support, create, and learn.

FILM SCHOOL FRIDAYS INTENSIVES

  • SCREENWRITING

    In these introductory workshops, participants will study essential storytelling techniques, character development, and script formatting. This immersive series serves as an ideal springboard for those looking to further develop their skills in our Beginner Level Narrative Lab.

  • CINEMATOGRAPHY

    These introductory workshops provides an entry-level overview of cinematography, covering camera basics and lighting essentials. Participants will gain practical skills to improve their storytelling. It's an ideal workshop for those seeking a solid foundation before progressing to our Beginner Level Documentary or Narrative Lab.

  • EDITING

    These introductory workshops provides a strong foundation in Adobe Premiere Pro, a top editing software. Through hands-on exercises and tutorials, you'll master essential editing techniques, from basic cuts to advanced transitions and effects. It's an ideal starting point before advancing to our Beginner-Level Documentary or Narrative Lab.

Announcing the Reel Works Food Pantry!

The Reel Works Student Pantry is a student-led initiative started to provide shelf-stable products to Reel Works filmmakers to combat food insecurity in our community.

Donations are collected at the Reel Works office on every first Friday of the month.

  • Dual Language Doc Lab

    Learn to use cameras, lighting, and sound to tell a story of family heritage, women’s empowerment, or the importance of mental health as teenagers. All workshops will be in Spanish and English.

  • Supported Summer Experimental Filmmaking Lab

    The Supported Summer Experimental Filmmaking Lab is an experimental filmmaking program that supports NYC students ages 15-21 who identify as neurodivergent to explore storytelling through filmmaking.

  • Career Lab

    Love filmmaking, but not sure what you want to do as your career? Join MediaMKRS Career Lab to gain insight into the media industry through paid rotational job shadowing.
