Meet Carlos Paula: Breaking Barriers Behind the Camera

At the intersection of storytelling and language accessibility, Reel Works is revolutionizing youth media education in New York City. Our groundbreaking Dual Language Documentary Lab Program, launched in summer 2024 through the generous support of NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns, is transforming how bilingual teens learn filmmaking in both Spanish and English.

"Even though I didn't know English, Reel Works gave me a sense of security and community," Carlos Paula, one of our emerging bilingual filmmakers.

Through our innovative five-week intensive program, Carlos mastered professional filmmaking equipment, directing techniques, and storytelling skills—all while working in both Spanish and English.

Creating Inclusive Spaces in Youth Media Education

The Dual Language Documentary Lab Program addresses a critical gap in media education. In New York City, where over 3.1 million residents speak languages other than English at home, providing bilingual filmmaking education isn't just an option—it's essential for nurturing diverse storytelling voices.

Program highlights include:

  • Hands-on training with professional-grade cameras and equipment

  • Bilingual instruction in documentary filmmaking techniques

  • Mentorship from Spanish-speaking industry professionals

  • Real-world experience in both languages

Impact Through Numbers: 2024 Achievements

  • 1,600 young New Yorkers served through free filmmaking programs

  • 281 youth placed in paid media industry internships

  • Launch of NYC's first Spanish-English Documentary Lab

  • Expansion of classroom space for 2025

"The Dual Language Program helps students come one step closer to learning filmmaking," Carlos reflects. "What you want to achieve you can get, and here you can get it faster."

Looking Ahead: Expanding Access to Film Education

As we expand our reach across New York City and beyond, Reel Works continues to break down barriers in media education. Our commitment to language accessibility ensures that talented young filmmakers can tell their stories authentically, regardless of their primary language.
