The Second Annual Reel Works Film Festival
Film enthusiasts and community supporters joined to enjoy films from the next generation of storytellers. This was our biggest film festival, with 42 films screened and over 300 people attending. We opened the festival to global filmmakers for the first time, allowing people worldwide to submit their work. This is not just a festival; it’s an international celebration of creativity and connection.
Our festival stands at the forefront of a truly inclusive media ecosystem. The variety of genres, themes, and storytelling techniques exemplifies our commitment to amplifying diverse voices. Winner of the Best Documentary, Chomchom, takes viewers on a journey to Bangladesh for the regional dessert Chomchom.
The Shidduch Crisis, the winner of Best Screenplay and Best Editor, follows a young woman struggling to conform to her religious community's expectations for an arranged marriage.
A distinguished panel of jurors composed of seasoned experts and industry veterans assembled for the weekend: Roger Mancusi, David Edelstein, Matt McDonald, Jordan Raup, Chris Rosen, Abbey White, Greg Boustead, Patricia Dicerto. Hailing from diverse backgrounds, these experts provided well-rounded assessments of the submitted films. Their keen insights enriched the evaluation process and reflected our commitment to advocating for a diverse film industry.
Co-Founder and Chief Program Officer, Stephanie Walter, who spearheaded the festival has plans to expand the festival next year to include more diverse filmmakers at the third annual film festival. “New York City is a golden tapestry of voices and cultures, races and lifestyles - and a beacon for people from all over the world whose stories count!”
As we reflect on this exceptional weekend, we look forward to what lies ahead. The Reel Works film festival is a glimpse into the future of filmmaking. From what we've seen, the future is undeniably brilliant.
