Celebrating Success: Four Cohorts Graduate from Reel Works in Schools Program

Reel Works in Schools is hard at work! Within the past month, the team has graduated four different cohorts of young filmmakers. Each program is unique in design and curriculum, but all emphasize the importance of storytelling and creative expression in students' educational journeys.

In a long standing partnership with Reel Works, Brooklyn Collaborative Studies celebrated the graduation of two cohorts of high school students from its stop-motion animation course. Led by Teaching Artists Zemia Edmonson and Alexis Roberts, this graduation marks the success of an unprecedented program. It opens new pathways for these young creatives in digital media and animation.

Irwin Altman Middle School recently celebrated the graduation of students who are a part of Janay Mosley's expertly led Art of Comedy course. The graduation ceremony was a vibrant showcase of the skills and comedic talent honed by the students under Mosley's guidance. This memorable event marks the culmination of their hard work and learning and sets the stage for these aspiring young comedians' future endeavors.

During the spring, MESA Charter High School students completed a four-day Narrative Course facilitated by the proficient Tameeka Colón. This unique experience was strategically designed as an academic exercise and a vital stepping stone toward graduation. Courses like these equip students with critical thinking and communication skills that prepare them for success in both academic and real-world scenarios. MESA Charter High School's commitment to offering innovative courses underlines its dedication to ensuring students are well-prepared as they progress toward graduation milestones.

Park Slope Elementary School fifth graders reached a significant milestone in their academic journey by completing the stop-motion course. Supported by teaching artists Juan Del Rio and Richards Nimbley, students acquired new skills in storytelling and animation. Their hard work and creativity will be showcased during the ceremony, highlighting the impressive skills they've acquired.

Joshua Stone, Reel Works in Schools Program Coordinator, said: "The fifth graders at Park Slope Elementary School teemed with pride, both for themselves and their classmates. They loved seeing their work so much, they had Juan and Richards play the animations for a second and third time."

Reel Works is immensely proud of the Reel Works in Schools department, whose recent series of graduations highlight the team’s exceptional work. These accomplishments underscore Reel Works’ commitment to empowering the next generation of storytellers and innovators in the media and entertainment industry.
