Reel Works in Schools Film Festival!
The 2022 Reel Works in Schools Film Festival welcomed over 50 film entries from over 500 New York City public school students. The films displayed a diversity of genres at the festival that reflects the range of courses available in our In-Schools Program.
Our fifth-grade students produced 15 witty and whimsical Stop-Motion Animations created with Lego figures and sets. Students at P.S. 126 learned to create their own hand-drawn titles and credits while students at P.S. 282k utilized green screens for special effects backgrounds. We’re grateful to our award-winning Teaching Artist Jian Luo for helping these young students get an early experience in filmmaking.
Meanwhile, middle schoolers at Irwin Altman create a silent film-era-inspired short comedy in our Art of Comedy course. Several noir narrative films were produced by students at Boys and Girls High School Students, students at MESA created two poetic films portraying the New York City commuter experience, and students from Millennium Brooklyn High School produced a riveting 20-minute documentary about the race relations present in their school. Sara Nesser of Young Women's Leadership School in Astoria shared how much she enjoyed the films: “I love how many different types of films there are to watch!"
Reel Works embraces its goal to inspire New York City youth to tell their authentic stories in class and beyond. If you weren't able to view the Film Festival live, catch the inspiration here.
