Breaking into the Casting Industry: Reel Works & LaGuardia Expand Training Program for Future Casting Assistants

In partnership with Theatrical Teamsters Local 817, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, AMC Networks, and LaGuardia Community College, Reel Works launched its innovative Casting Assistant Training Program, helping emerging professionals launch careers in the media and entertainment industry.

Supported by the New York Entertainment Workforce Diversity Grant Program, this initiative provides hands-on casting training to New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds, providing real-world insight and meaningful industry connections to help them thrive in one of the most exclusive–and often overlooked–areas of production: casting.

“It’s rare to get an inside look at a niche,” said Marg, one of the program graduates. “It was great that the program invited union casting directors to speak about their experience. It felt authentic and sincere — not just the usual ‘you’ll make your connections’ or ‘it all depends on luck,’ which I heard often in film school. This program was much more helpful in actually entering the field.”

🎓 Real-World Skills for Careers in Casting

The program delivers intensive, skills-based training in casting assistant fundamentals, including working with agents and directors, organizing auditions and navigating union standards. It’s specifically designed to prepare participants for entry-level roles in casting departments, a career path that is difficult to access without industry connections.

“If you’re on the fence about something like this, just do it,” said Kyle, another graduate. “There are people in this program without any previous experience in casting, but no matter how much experience you have, it’s still incredibly beneficial. I would recommend this to pretty much everyone.”

💬 Building Inclusive Pathways into Film & TV

For many participants, the most impactful part of the experience was connecting with working professionals in a space that felt authentic and accessible. Centered on mentorship, professional development and network-building, the program created an environment where students could ask questions and envision a future in entertainment with clarity and confidence.

“My advice is to stay curious about the people you meet, the people you want to work with, and who you want to cast,” said Lacey. “The best way to look forward is to have an open mind. I hope anyone interested in joining Reel Works has curiosity at the forefront of their mission statement.”
