Womyn's Gender Empowerment Group - Desiree Akhavan

Desiree Akhavan joined our Womyn's Empowerment Group and made a strong impact on the young people in the room. The ladies shared stories about college acceptances, achievements in projects, and how grateful they were to be able to hear from someone that inspires them. Sarah Restigno, Fellows 2020, mentioned that she watched Desiree Akhavan's film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, twice in theaters and was happy to be in such an intimate setting to ask questions and hear more about Desiree's experiences.

"Never have I felt more comfortable and safer than in this space with these ladies." - Mame Toure, Reel Works' Ambassador and Administrative Intern

"It was a great experience I was able to learn a lot about her journey through becoming a successful person. It was very inspiring because in a way it was relatable where she started off with not much and is [now] where she's at right now." -Maribel Garcia, Fall Lab 2017

"I think she as very helpful because I was telling her about my filmmaking journey and she encouraged me that if I really want to do something don't try and go around it, just go straight for it." - Annalya Reddick, Fellows 2020
