On set of “Cherries” with Jordyn Benda

Director Jordan Brenda and her DP Melissa Yiu are on set.

Jordyn Benda is a dynamic director in the 2021 Narrative Lab cohort. Her film Cherries is a story about a new girl in school trying to find her place. After joining a secret society she struggles with how much she’s willing to do to fit in.

The production of Cherries took place in the summer of 2021. Jordyn worked closely with her Director of Photography, Melissa Yiu, and her mentor, Sergio Vaccaro, to prepare a detailed shot list and production schedule prior to shooting her film.

Jordyn shared, “On set, I was able to learn a lot more about how to adapt as we work through challenges and also help everyone stay calm. The bond between the cast and crew was able to grow stronger and quicker and there was a strong level of trust at the end. Now that I’m in post-production, I’m realizing that what I have may not be what I dreamed it to be, but it’s becoming something brand new and I love it even more!”

Although there was a last-minute casting change due to an actor dropping out, she was able to build a strong connection with her cast and they delivered an honest portrayal of teenage girls and the struggles of making a friend.

During the production day, the entire cast grew closer as a filmmaking community and ended on a high note as they dined on pastries from the cafe at their last location.

Jordyn is actively coming into the Reel Works office to edit her film and has been open to feedback as she brings her original vision to life.
