Master Class with Director and Producer Sara Dosa
On December 16th, Reel Works collaborated with Sandbox Films to host award-winning director and producer Sara Dosa, to learn more about her process of making Fire of Love. The conversation was moderated by Reel Works Board Member and Sandbox Films’ Head of Production and Executive Producer, Jessica Harrop.
The conversation uncovered Sara’s progression from producing to directing, and early career experiences that shaped her journey through the industry. She reflected on obstacles she faced and the decision to attend graduate school. Most importantly, she reflected on relationships she maintained throughout her career that benefited her in the creation of Fire of Love, including her relationship with Jessica Harrop and other collaborators at Sandbox Films: “It was a dream on so many levels and my first time in my professional career where I was able to work with a team and not have to take on a second job for work and where I was just able to be director. It was an incredible thing and frees your mind and allows you to embrace the creative process that I didn’t think would ever be possible for me.”
Sara and Jessica discussed their collaboration and the process of making Fire of Love once Sandbox Films took it on. They showed behind the scenes from traveling to late-night editing sessions. The most intriguing part of the process was the sound design, which was illustrated through Sara showing the soundless film footage they received, compared to the final film which is full of volcanoes exploding. They even collaborated with scientists to ensure that their sound design was scientifically accurate.
Great and impactful audience questions came from not only Reel Works students, but independent filmmakers tuning in from as far as Belgium. To learn more about our Master Class series, you can visit our website, sign up for our mailing list, or contact Mara Sheban at mara@reelworks.org.
