Get to know "Reel Works In Schools"!
REEL WORKS IN SCHOOLS brings our award winning workshops to an additional 200 youth per year through partnerships with six middle and high schools citywide. This week, we highlight two middle schools, doing great things - Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BSC) in Cobble Hill and PS 323 in Brownsville!
Resident teacher, Chris O'Falt has been working with the students of BSC on creating a visual component for the poems that they've written about their own neighborhoods. These poems discussed what the kids loved the most about their neighborhoods and also the social problems that their neighborhoods are facing. The middle schoolers were given cameras and sent out to look for images that will help tell the story of their poems visually. Together, we were able to create 5 in depth video portraits of how they viewed their homes. Watch the visual poem "Where I'm From" by JESKY!
Another school that Reel Works is working with is PS 323 in Brownsville. Over the course of three sessions, Teaching Assistant Zachary Lennon-Simon, will be working with these middle schoolers to create a 90 second Anti-Bullying video. During the first session, the kids discussed why bullies bully and then decided to make their video from the perspective of the bully. In just one class period, they wrote out a script, cast all parts, and shot their entire video. Pretty impressive for first time filmmakers!
With the help of our incredible education staff, Reel Works now has even more ways of accomplishing our goal: to give teens the means to tell their stories!
